HOOK MATE
Hook Mate is a coordinated checkmating pattern involving a rook, knight, and pawn. It is named for the hook-like shape formed by these pieces: the rook is defended by the knight, and the knight is defended by a pawn. The enemy king is restricted by this coordinated formation, while the pieces seal all escape squares.
The essential elements of Hook Mate:
- The enemy king is restricted by the rook–knight–pawn formation.
- A rook delivers mate along a rank or file
- A knight protects the rook and controls key escape squares
- A pawn protects the knight, completing the “hook” structure
- The mating net restricts all flight squares
